You may recall that the US is slowly but inevitably sliding towards military rule. K.A. just linked to this (stunning photo, that), which was another click in the head - even peaceful and positive civil disobedience can be used as an excuse to create a junta.

(If I were a real writer I'd be using reality as a novel plot right now.)
