Except the general aspersions on steampunk. Steampunk is cool, and I'm sure there must be one great steampunk novel, although I've not read it.

It's Iron Council by China Mieville. Because it's all about the technology. Steampunk seems to mostly be pure aesthetic and it DOES look cool but it gets old for me fast, especially when it involves disconnected cogs that can't do anything. I spent Sunday here and the dressing-up was awesome but speaking as someone who loves the history of science and technology, I don't get much out of it intellectually. Except in Iron Council (and The Scar but for totally different reasons. The Scar is about unknowingness.)

you know, 'steampunk cupcake' is alarmingly anachronistic. Can't we have steampunk jam tarts or whatever? I won't even start on the 'mocha torte'. Only now I am imagining a time-travelling confectioner who brings strange new cakes to times past and thereby makes a fortune, doubtless with the secret aid of modern cake technology.

I have to protest on behalf of the orange + Grand Marnier cupcake.

see, that would win me over but Fly is teetotal. She has allergies :(
