red herrings

(I kinda can't believe I even have to make this post and I am definitely not the right person to be doing it, but seriously?)

okay, look, I hate the newest LJ redesign as much as the rest of you, although due to the specific ways I use LJ (ie. almost entirely in small fandom communities & other people's personal blogs - I've rarely used my own personal LJ) I am less impacted by them than most fandom users. HOWEVER, the DW evangelism is getting grating. It's a site. It provides you with services in return for you providing it with a product. It will not be forever free from wank, technical issues or censorship and it would be naive to believe that it would even if.

Its admin is a human being who has spent an awfully long time in the LJ fandom limelight, which is to say that many of us know where the bodies are buried. If this is somehow shocking news to you and you therefore wish to examine some shallow graves, there's Yonmei's story about receiving sexual harassment and rape threats on LJ, this post about the more blatant hypocrisies of Nipplegate, and more recently there was the Mitchellwank declaration that fanon (or canon) creators should be able to tell you what to write which was relevant to me personally because it had so much in common with the (minor, but ngl it hurt) incident that raised my ire in the first place. If your desire to rehash wank is not sated by all that, google will be your friend. But the worst, most personal incidents that I am aware of are not things I can simply link to or even speak about. Life is like this; horrible things happen, and they happen more often around some people than others, and even on the internet our histories go largely unrecorded except perhaps in the jigsaw-puzzle of logs and links and stories. I am getting a little bit tired of people who expect the future to be a whole lot different.

LOL the Mitchellwank. I was in SG-1 fandom back then >.> I remember Yonmei too, she was in one of my fandoms, and an incredibly bitchy person. That said, nobody deserves what that blog post describes happened to her and as much as I disliked her, I would fight tooth and nail for her to get some kind of justice (if such a thing exists for psychological trauma) for that.

I mostly got fed up with LJ because of the attitude the designers are taking that user feedback, especially PAID user feedback, is unimportant. So far, DW seems to be really positive about moving our 1 million+ comment RP community over and has been helpful in letting us cut ties with LJ so from a customer standpoint, I'm satisfied.

I think I never got outraged at Nipplegate or the Strikethroughs because I was a good bit younger and really, really not political at all. Breastfeeding wank wasn't on my radar as a early 20s college student and I wasn't really active in anything that got affected by the kiddie porn allegations.

If those things happened now, you'd better damn believe I'd be raising cain about it.

Well, from lurking the LJ news posts, I think the majority of people will stick this out. Hell, if functionality wasn't an issue, I'd stick it out, but having my phone browser crash repeatedly is not fun. If I can even get the damn pages to load at all, it's weird and wonky looking. And then taking into account that a lot of stuff I write for kink memes is triggery like whoa, not having subject lines anymore is troubling.

I held out against Dreamwidth for a long time because I knew (mostly from you, but also from other sources) about the issues you mentioned in your post, and I figured the perfect blogging site run by people with no skeletons in their closet didn't exist, so I'd just stay with LJ, because apart from not having ads, I didn't see what was so great about DW anyway, and I have years of history and friendships over there that I was loathe to leave behind. Times change, I guess, and I definitely plan to start using Dw for more than just creeping your journal.

A lot of my comms are switching to custom layouts with custom comment pages, which since both of my journals use custom comment pages anyway, it's not so much of an issue in day to day journaling, but for fannish purposes it is very sucky and I want the old comment pages back, ffs, or at least let us choose icons from a drop down menu because seriously, waiting for forty icons to load is bad enough, can't imagine how much of a pain it is for people with 100 or more. And then most of them won't display anyway, and then it freezes up and argh. Lj is so much more trouble than it's worth right now. I was lucky to be able to read and comment on your fic this morning.

(Thene, I initially joined this site just for you.)
