i may have mentioned this before
Ponyo is freaking amazing. I watched it again twice in the last few days and here is my list of reasons why it is totally totally wonderful:
-it is sea, and I love sea.
-it evokes Wagner, Shakespeare and Hans Christian Anderson, and is none of these things
-most of the incidental cast is either under six years old or over seventy years old
-it is about odd!families, specifically about two people who each have one absentee parent coded as sea.
-it's making that same bridge you get in tarot from moon-->tide-->deep sea-->evolutionary prehistory, and by that point you're a skimmed stone from madness
-it's unpacking the basic mermaid idea - part-person, part-sea, in love with the other side of the tideline - and pulling it into many, many different shapes; Ponyo, Fujimoto, Koichi, the Goddess of Mercy...
-and the Little Mermaid is playing the Emperor, because she wants to.
-I still tear up when the Goddess of Mercy first appears. Just looking at her. The visual contrast between her presence and that of everyone else makes me teary
-I want to run on the tops of the waves
-OKAY I AM GOING TO DEVOTE THE REST OF THIS ENTRY TO LISA. IN CAPSLOCK. LISA IS AMAZING. I ONCE SAW A SPRINGKINK PROMPT FOR LISA/KOICHI MORSE CODE SEX. WHY DO I WISH I HAD FILLED IT. SHE IS A YOUNG MOTHER WHO DRIVES A PINK MINI IN FABULOUSLY DANGEROUS WAYS. SHE BELIEVES IN BEING CALM AND ALSO IN GETTING ANGRY WHEN KOICHI DESERVES IT. SHE IS DETERMINED TO BE A LIGHTHOUSE IN THE MIDST OF TERRIFYING WEATHER. SHE IS PREPARED FOR ANYTHING. THERE IS NO FACET IN WHICH LISA IS NOT AWESOME. LAST NIGHT I WATCHED PONYO WITH DENISE AND SHE SAYS THAT LISA IS A BLOCKHEAD, IS BIPOLAR AND IS A TERRIBLE PARENT. LISA IS AMAZING. I WANT TO WATCH PONYO WITH JAY JUST BECAUSE I THINK HE'D REALLY LIKE LISA. I SHIP HER WITH FUJIMOTO JUST BECAUSE SHE DISAPPROVES OF HIM SO MUCH. OKAY ALSO BECAUSE THEY'D BE CUTE TOGETHER.
