Well at least the NYT Public Editor's Journal chose to simultaneously remind us why this election is so damn boring and why the old media deserves its rapidly approaching death; that way we don't have to read two bloativating NYT articles to fathom it!

I remember 2008. I was, as I coincidentally am now, untethered from real life - stuck in immigration, spamming around blogspot and talking to Ting on the internet for hours at a stretch. The Lolection kept us in a constant state of tense amusement, and sometimes it was more important than that; I remember wandering around cleaning while listening to A More Perfect Union. I remember walking my dog amid a forest of McCain-Palin lawn signs, some of which stayed up until well into 2009. One line that stuck with me was a 538 comment that said "We are all Fake Virginians now."

Also coincidentally, I'm mainlining Fear And Loathing On The Campaign Trail '72, in which Thompson documents (amid his other excesses) all the bets he was making with campaign staff along the way, and reminisces a lot about the election four years previous - the 'downer' with its trail of bullets. An excerpt:

I went to Nixon's Inauguration [in 1969]. Washington was a sea of mud and freezing rain. As the Inaugural Parade neared the corner of 16th and Pennsylvania Avenue, some freak threw a half-gallon wine jug at the convertible carrying the commandant of the Marine Corps . . . and as one-time Presidential candidate George Romney passed by in his new role as Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, the mob on the sidewalk began chanting "Romney eats shit! Romney eats shit!"

George tried to ignore it. He knew the TV cameras were on him so he curled his mouth up in a hideous smile and kept waving at the crowd - even as they continued to chant "Romney eats shit!"

I walked in the rain with Grendel earlier; All Souls, and no one in the streets except for yard scarecrows, who appear to support Elizabeth Warren.

Thompson reminds me that the gods walk among us and they aren't pretty.
